Summer Jobs

Share

Many of us in the business community have been reaping the benefits of the recovered economy. However, many young people in our area today still are mired in an economic struggle that may result in a bleak future for even the most capable of them.

Los Angeles area high school students are badly in need of jobs. For them, entering the work force is vital to insuring their continuing education and personal independence. Some disadvantaged youths face an even harsher reality. They need the income just to keep their families solvent and together.

My company is concerned about their prospects for employment. We’re doing our part by participating in FIRST BREAK, a program committed to placing 10,000 Los Angeles area high school students in jobs in more than 5,000 large and small companies this summer. The program is privately funded and sponsored by the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and the Los Angeles Unified School District. I am pleased to be 1985 chairman of this very worthwhile program.

FIRST BREAK benefits employees as well as students. Employers show good business sense when they give jobs to these capable young people because they gain a dedicated and enthusiastic group of employees. To quote one of our students, “To me, working is not just making money. There’s also pride, prestige and responsibility involved.” Hiring students also builds good public relations, shows community spirit and helps develop the future work force.

Perhaps some of your readers can help by offering one or several of these young people their FIRST BREAK. Job orders can be placed by calling (213) 625-6688.
