A resolution marking allegations of genocide of 1.5 million Armenians by the Turks during and after World War I failed to get enough votes for adoption in the House. The vote--233 to 180 in favor of the measure--was short of the two-thirds majority needed for adoption without amendment. Rep. Tony Coelho (D-Merced) had more than 200 co-sponsors for the measure but it was strongly opposed by President Reagan and the government of Turkey.
