Southern Baptists streamed into Dallas, primed for a showdown encounter between fundamentalists and moderates over control of the country’s biggest Protestant body. Their meeting, starting Tuesday, is expected to be the largest in the denomination’s history, drawing an expected 30,000 or more voting “messengers.” Discord over views of the Bible, with fundamentalists demanding strict interpretation, has divided the 14.3-million-member denomination.
