Smoking Ban Approved: The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a ban on smoking in county buildings, to take effect in 90 days. The ban applies to all county-owned and county-leased buildings, except for jails, and to all spaces in the buildings except designated smoking areas. Currently, smoking is banned in county buildings open to the public. The action, taken on a 3-2 vote with Supervisors Thomas F. Riley and Ralph Clark in opposition, left it up to private businesses to come up with plans to regulate smoking in their workplaces. Riley and Clark had wanted mandatory rules in companies with more than 10 employees and located in unincorporated county territory.
