Two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies surrendered on charges of beating a pair of Covina men they arrested as drunk-driving suspects, the district attorney’s office reported. Edwin Cruger, 30, and David K. Moore, 26, were accused of two counts of assault under the color of authority and one count of false imprisonment. Cruger also was charged with filing a false police report. Both pleaded not guilty in Municipal Court and were ordered to return July 2 for a preliminary hearing date. District attorney’s spokesman Al Albergate said Cruger and Moore arrested Terry Ressler, 26, and Daniel David Scott, 28, at East Arrow Highway and Azusa Avenue last Feb. 17. They allegedly handcuffed both men and took them in their patrol car to a nearby parking lot, where Cruger is accused of beating them with a flashlight. Ressler later pleaded guilty to misdemeanor drunk driving. A battery case against Scott was dismissed.
