Recent exposure of several Los Angeles County firefighters to a victim of AIDS has prompted County Fire Chief John Englund to order that all county fire vehicles carry manual mask respirators so that rescuers can avoid direct physical contact with accident victims. Los Angeles City Fire Department officials said they are considering purchase of similar respirators. The “mouth-to-mask” respirator, already used by several major fire departments, allows rescuers to blow air through a tube connected to a mask that covers the victim’s face.
