The Newhall Land & Farming Co. said Friday that it has elected a new president, Thomas L. Lee, 43, in anticipation of the eventual retirement of James F. Dickason, 62, who had been both president and chairman. Dickason, who joined the company in 1951, retains the chairmanship.

Lee joined the company in 1970 and had been senior vice president for real estate since last year. Also promoted was Gary Cusumano, 41, who was named executive vice president. He joined Newhall in 1969 and had been vice president for agriculture.

Based in Valencia, Newhall is one of California’s largest land owners, with business interests in farming and real estate development.

Lee said although there is no firm date on Dickason’s retirement, “I think it’s fair to say that he intends to retire within the next few years.”

Cusumano’s responsibilities, Lee said, will be expanded to include both agriculture and real estate. Robert D. Wilke will continue as executive vice president and chief financial officer.
