The head of the Internal Revenue Service downplayed the significance of the agency’s destruction of 63,000 tax inquiries at its Fresno service center, calling the move “a slight deviation from procedure.” IRS Commissioner Roscoe Egger made the remark while touring the center, which processes federal income tax returns for California and Hawaii. IRS employees had said they were under orders earlier this year to shred letters from businesses inquiring about tax-due notices. The shredding and the slow processing of federal income tax returns will be the subject of a congressional hearing that Egger plans to attend in Fresno June 28.
