Reagan’s Tax Proposals

Share

A funny thing happened to me on the way to Page 5 in The Times (June 7), I read excerpts from President Reagan’s commencement address in Atlanta. The headline read: “Everyone Should Pay Taxes.” Reagan said, “We want to see that everyone pays their fair share and no one gets a free ride,” and, “We’re all free citizens in the eyes of the law and equal in the eyes of God (Reagan rhetoric!), and, “It’s good to know that no one is manipulating the system to their advantage because they are rich and powerful.”

This from a man who in 1970 had paid no state income taxes.

I laughed a rather sad, ironical laugh, wondering if Reagan has conveniently relegated this fact to the far recesses of his mind.
