Church Membership Up 1%, Ending Long Decline

WASHINGTON —
Church membership nationwide grew slightly less than 1% in 1983, ending a long decline in mainline church membership, the National Council of Churches said Tuesday.
The figures, from 219 religious bodies in the United States and the most comprehensive data available, put the churches’ collective membership at 140,816,385, the council said.
