A man armed with a hunting rifle went on a shooting rampage across western France on Wednesday, killing seven people and injuring five before he was seized by police, officials said.

The man, identified as Guy Martel, 41, began the deadly spree by fatally shooting his father in the town of Baguer Morvan, police said. Martel then drove through a string of small towns near the port of Saint-Malo, opening fire on relatives and strangers alike.

Police said that Martel, who had been treated for mental disorders, killed two people in Dol-de-Bretagne and one each in Saint Domineuc, Chapelle-aux-Fillzmeens, Combourg and Quebriac.
