The new contract, which becomes effective July 1, covers workers at New United Motor Manufacturing in Fremont, Calif., the United Auto Workers reported. New United is a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors. The pact virtually guarantees no layoffs and gives the UAW an unusual amount of access to information and decision making at the plant. There are about 1,200 UAW-represented workers at the plant.
