After a series of late appeals failed to save his life, killer Charles Milton was put to death early Tuesday with a lethal injection.

The U.S. Supreme Court and Gov. Mark White both turned down last-minute efforts to block the execution.

Milton, 34, was convicted of killing a Fort Worth liquor store owner’s wife during an aborted robbery in 1977. He became a Muslim while he was in prison and used his final statement to pray to Allah.
