Carlisle Shoots Way to Lead at Nationals

Dan Carlisle, the 1984 Olympic trap bronze medalist, missed only two of 75 clay targets Tuesday to lead the Olympic trap event at the 25th U.S. International Shooting Championships at the Prado Tiro shooting range in the Chino Valley.

Carlisle, of Conroe, Tex., scored a 73 in the second day of the five-day competition for a total score of 146 out of 150 targets. He finished the day one target in front of Peter Piffath of Lloyd Harbor, N.Y., who scored 145 after two days.

Piffath, who led after the first day of competition after missing just one target, shot a perfect 25-target second round but missed two targets in both the first and third rounds.

Mike Coleman of Ackerly, Tex., and Dayne Johnson of Panorama City finished tied for third at 144.

Frances Strodtman of Jackson, Mont., led the women’s trap event with a second-day score of 66.
