‘Landlocked Love Boat’ Ready to Sail

Kidspace fans are leaving the young fry at home and stepping aboard a “Landlocked Love Boat” on Saturday evening--the SS Popovich--at the home of Jane and Kris Popovich in San Marino. The purpose is certainly altruistic: to raise enough to cover the considerable expense of air-conditioning Kidspace’s wide open spaces at the museum in Pasadena.

Mrs. David Partridge heads the benefit committee, with a well-sailed crew, including Mmes. Jud O. Roberts, Mitchell Milias, Olin Barrett, George Tuerk and Robert Takeuchi. Boat passengers will compete for prizes, including a La Quinta weekend. Rococo will be the galley master.

Cruising, too, are James D. Boswell, Stewart R. Smith, Paul Giuntini, H. Michael Hecht, H. Earl Hoover II, John F. King, Michael D. LeRoy, F. Jack Liebau, Louis Melillo and Thomas E. Mitchell. Kidspace has had a good year, according to Elaine Fleming, director. Attendance zoomed this year to more than 60,000. One of the reasons is the video featuring entertainer Billy Crystal.

The Hollywood Bowl opens its summer season with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra on Tuesday. Already the International Committee and the Philharmonic Affiliates are planning to set up stations to promote their popular “Fly-Away and Drive-Away” benefit ticket sales.

Chairman Mrs. Boris Guinkh is assisted by Gertilda Voss Conti. They’ve lined up a Isuzu Turbo Impulse for the grand prize and first prize round-trip tickets for two (with Gucci luggage) to Rio de Janeiro and Bogata via Avianca Colombia airlines.

Pick up some fly-away tickets when you walk in with your picnic baskets this summer.

The Patrons of the Costume Council for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Saks Fifth Avenue will be the cocktail hosts at the premiere collection of designer Donna Karan on Wednesday.

Cordella and James Owens no sooner returned from London and the Scandinavian countries (it was cold, they say), than they staged a special 21st birthday party at Jimmy’s in Beverly Hills for their daughter Jennifer, home from Boston University.

Her friend, John Aldridge Jr., who shares the same birth date, traveled from Boston for the party. More dancing in the Palm Garden were Isabelle Buckley and Walter Baumhoff, chatting with Buckley School graduates from far and near; and Myron and Rose Kunin, Madeleine and Ed Landry (listed among the outstanding attorneys in Town and Country), the Robert Wallers of Northridge (the Owens’ traveling companions) and the John Eikenmeyers, their neighbors in Indian Wells.

Vilma Martinez, chairman of the UC Regents, was on hand at Los Angeles Coca-Cola Bottling headquarters to present exceptional scholar certificates to Los Angeles recipients among the 253 “best and brightest” graduating high school seniors who are of Latino descent.

Making the selection and hosting the reception was the Youth Opportunity Foundation. Chairman is Fernando Oaxaca. The private foundation has awarded thousands of grants the last 20 years. “We have too much in the media about the underachievers among our young people; people must also be aware of the thousands of kids of Hispanic descent who are making it and who can serve as role models for others,” Northrop attorney Steve Yslas said.
