A Berkeley man charged with mailing a fake bomb to rock star David Bowie at his record company’s office in Los Angeles has been sentenced to three years’ probation. George Simpson, 37, who pleaded no contest to the charges before Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ernest M. Hiroshige, apparently had mailed the facsimile bomb as a means of getting the rock star’s attention. Enclosed with the fake bomb, authorities said, were a manuscript and a rambling letter, signed by Simpson, asking Bowie to read the manuscript. The package listed Simpson’s name and return address.
