A group opposing U.S. involvement in Central America staged a “walkathon” in Venice, while a pro- contras group staged a spirited but non-violent counter-demonstration. Fifty people walked a 12-kilometer route under the banner of the Committee in Solidarity With the People of El Salvador (CISPES) to raise funds for medical and school supplies, farm equipment and bomb shelters for El Salvador. A dozen members of a group calling itself Nemesis picketed the walkers and shouted anti-Communist slogans. A CISPES spokesman said the group hoped to raise at least $1,500 to support humanitarian efforts in El Salvador.
