Teamsters Union leaders are calling for a Northern California strike against Lucky Stores next week, which could result in a management lockout at Safeway Stores. The dispute is over the decision by the two grocery chains to impose their last contract offer on their Teamsters workers over their objections. Teamsters voted overwhelmingly last month to reject the last contract offer from the Food Employers Council, which negotiates for both Lucky and Safeway.Union leaders will urge members to vote for a strike against Lucky at a meeting Sunday in Oakland. The walkout is only called for against Lucky because a 1978 strike left many shoppers complaining the labor dispute at both chains left them with no choice but to cross picket lines, Mack said. However, the two chains have an agreement that if one is struck, the other will lock out its Teamsters employees.
