Two men who were killed in their sleep by carbon monoxide fumes in a motel here were identified Saturday as Booker Anderson, 45, of Los Angeles and Robert Shoemaker, a retired Navy man who lived at the hotel.

Four other hotel guests remained hospitalized after inhaling the fumes Friday. Their conditions ranged from good to stable, authorities said.

Fire officials said that a malfunctioning gas water heater caused the fumes to spread into one wing of the 100-room Crest Motel in downtown Las Vegas Friday morning.

Assistant Las Vegas Fire Chief Richard Gammon said it appeared that the carbon monoxide had been building up for three or four days. The gas was not detected until paramedics responded to a “sick call” and found the two dead men in separate rooms.
