California Atty. Gen. John K. Van de Kamp said a section of the state Insurance Code that requires insurance companies to charge different life insurance rates to men and women is unconstitutional. The statute directs insurers to charge lower premiums for women because, on the average, they live longer than men. Van de Kamp said the section constitutes sexual discrimination.
