W. Germany Gets ‘Mengele’ Remains
Two filled teeth and assorted other fragments of a body said to be that of Nazi death camp doctor Josef Mengele were delivered to West German authorities Monday by a Brazilian police chief.
Sao Paulo Police Chief Romeu Tuma arrived at Frankfurt airport and turned his forensic evidence over to Frankfurt Dist. Atty. Hans-Eberhard Klein, who led West Germany’s hunt for Mengele.
The two teeth with fillings, as well as two bones of the left hand and some hair, were removed from a body exhumed from a cemetery outside Sao Paulo on June 6.
Brazilian police, citing forensic examinations and opinions from an international team of scientists, say the body buried in Brazil under the name Wolfgang Gerhard was “with extreme probability” that of Mengele, the most wanted Nazi war criminal.
Klein said Tuma also delivered a 26-page Mengele report, complete with 94 color photographs prepared by 20 scientists that said that on the basis of available evidence, the remains were those of Mengele.
