GETTY PROGRAM FOR ART TEACHERS GETS UNDER WAY

Elementary school teachers, principals, superintendents and board members from 21 Los Angeles County school districts are convening throughout the city this month for the third Getty Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts.

The institute was created as a pilot project to explore ways of teaching art to children as a “discipline-based” program incorporating art history, criticism, production and aesthetics. The philosophy behind the program encourages art as a serious, integrated part of a balanced curriculum instead of as recreation or copy work.

Institute participants--both those who already have implemented the program in their schools and those just embarking on it--hear lectures by prominent art educators and receive instruction on classroom techniques on analyzing, interpreting and making art. They also tour major Southland museums, where curators lead them through collections and offer insights on approaches to art.

The summer institute is administered by the Getty Center for Education in the Arts, one of seven operating entities of the J. Paul Getty Trust.
