Sri Lanka Talks Falter, Recess for a Month
Talks between the Sri Lankan government and Tamil separatist leaders adjourned Saturday for a month to allow the government to prepare new proposals to end the ethnic violence on the island, the Press Trust of India reported.
Six days of negotiations in Bhutan floundered when delegates representing the majority Sinhalese government restated proposals for limited local autonomy for minority Tamils that were rejected last December, the Indian news agency reported.
“These did not satisfy, even remotely, their aspirations,” it said.
