Law and Order

This is in response to your news item (July 5), “Informant in Police Theft Scandal Put on Probation.”

As a former law enforcement officer, I am outraged at the disposition of the Hollywood Division burglary case.

Much could be said about the required virtues of police officers vis-a-vis the law. Suffice it to say that they should not, themselves, break the law since it is they who are the models for each new generation.

But, unfortunately, despite careful screening, a bad apple or two turn up once in awhile. When that happens, the department itself and the entire judicial system--prosecutors, judges, etc.--should do everything in their power to punish the offenders to the limits of the law.

No one forced these criminals to join the police force. But now with the help of the judicial system, they have brought shame and embarrassment to every dedicated law enforcement officer.
