Portugal’s Socialist Party has named Antonio Almeida Santos, the parliamentary affairs minister, as its candidate for prime minister in elections set for Oct. 6. The realignment at the top of Portugal’s largest party is designed to free its leader, Prime Minister Mario Soares, to run for president in an election in December or January, party sources said. Soares will remain as caretaker prime minister until after the October elections, called last week after the ruling coalition split on economic issues.
