A rally of 10,000 South-Central and East Los Angeles residents at Mount St. Mary’s College won the endorsement of national, state and city leaders for a package of community-backed anti-crime bills pending in the California Legislature, and of their efforts to win funds from the Olympic surplus for youth programs in their areas of the city. Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Calif.), Rep. Edward Roybal (D-Los Angeles), Dist. Atty. Ira Reiner and several state legislators in attendance all agreed to support the South Central Organizing Committee and the East Los Angeles’ United Neighborhoods Organization in their campaign against crime and in their proposals for money from the Olympic surplus.
