Woman Shot to Death in S. Africa Violence

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa —
Police fired on a crowd that was stoning cars Tuesday, killing a woman, and rioting spread through 17 South African townships.
A police spokesman in Pretoria confirmed the woman’s death during violence by 1,500 in the black township of Lynville, outside the coal-mining town of Witbank east of Johannesburg.
The South African Press Assn. reported she was pregnant.
