VATICAN CITY —
Mayor Harold Washington of Chicago was greeted Wednesday by Pope John Paul II at his weekly general audience in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican officials said. Washington was not received in a private audience but occupied a seat on the VIP dais near the papal throne during the open-air event.
