DEUTSCHE OPER LISTS PROGRAM REVISIONS

Repertory, conducting and cast changes have been made in the engagement by the Deutsche Oper Berlin at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Sept. 9-22. Officials at the sponsoring Music Center Opera Assn. declined to provide explanations for the revisions.

Three scheduled programs of operetta excerpts will be replaced by two additional performances of “Le nozze di Figaro” (Sept. 19, 21). There will be no Sept. 21 matinee.

Contrary to previous announcements, Jesus Lopez-Cobos, music director of the company, will not accompany the company here. “Tosca” will now be conducted at all performances (Sept. 9, 11, 14) by Silvio Varviso. The name of Johan Arnell, who had been scheduled to lead the last “Tosca,” has been withdrawn. The role of Spoletta will be sung by Donald Grobe, instead of Loren Driscoll.

Justino Diaz, remembered locally for appearances with the New York City Opera, has been added to the roster and will sing the title role in “Figaro” on Sept. 18, 20 and 22. Manfred Roehrl, previously announced for the first performance, sings the role Sept. 19 and 21. Similarly, Pilar Lorengar (Sept. 18 and 20) will now alternate in the role of Countess Almaviva with Lucy Peacock (Sept. 19, 21, 22). Alan Titus, another New York City Opera alumnus, has been added as an alternate Count Almaviva (Sept. 19, 21), sharing that role with Wolfgang Brendel (Sept. 18, 20, 22). Daphne Evangelatos has replaced Graziella Araia as the second Cherubino (Sept. 20, 22).

No changes have been announced for the Sept. 10 and 13 performances of Korngold’s “Die tote Stadt,” but one major addition has been made for this German-language production--supertitles, which, in this specific instance, will be called “Surtitles.” Although “Nozze” and “Tosca” will be sung in the original Italian, “Surtitles” will not be provided.
