Ground was broken Tuesday for Gateway Corporate Center, a $7.2-million, 45,000-square-foot, three-story office complex at 300 W. Owens Drive., Santa Ana, an area becoming central Orange County’s financial district.

The complex is a joint venture of Halferty Development Co. of Pasadena and Irvine and Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Co. of Hartford, Conn. Completion is scheduled next March.

Herbert Nadel AIA & Partners of Santa Monica is the architect of the steel-frame building, sheathed in brick and Grey-Lite 14 Vision Glass. Dinwiddie Construction Co. is the general contractor.

Gateway Center financing was through Santa Ana city commercial development bonds, arranged by First Interstate Mortgage Co. The leasing agent is Coldwell Banker Commercial Real Estate Services.

Richard A. DeBeikes Jr., managing partner of Halferty’s Irvine office, said, “The center is part of a massive redevelopment project intended to revitalize Santa Ana’s Main Street financial district and establish it as a major, diverse urban center.”

The project was awarded to Halferty by the Santa Ana Redevelopment Agency, which also plans a 67-acre high-tech center, a domed sports arena, a new office tower and hotel and a foreign trade zone.

Gateway Center is contiguous to the Santa Ana (5) Freeway at the new Broadway overpass, at its confluence with the Garden Grove (22) and Orange (57) freeways and is one mile south of the Newport (55) Freeway.
