Four-Hour Surgery for Wallace

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. —
Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace underwent four hours of spinal surgery today to relieve chronic pain endured since he was shot by an assassin 13 years ago and an aide, quoting doctors, said there were no complications.
“We have not been notified of any complications or anything,” press secretary Billy Joe Camp said minutes after Wallace was taken to a recovery room at Swedish Hospital. Dr. Daniel P. Lammertse, Wallace’s attending physician, has said it will be at least Thursday before doctors could determine if the operation was successful.
