Alabama Governor Awaits Surgery to Ease Back Pain

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. —
Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace worked on state business in his hospital room Tuesday as he awaited surgery today to alleviate pain from the gunshot wounds he suffered in an assassination attempt 13 years ago.
The operation, which involves exposing the spine and opening the outer covering of the spinal cord to deaden nerve endings, is expected to take three to four hours, doctors said.
