Los Angeles County supervisors asked the California Highway Patrol to use radar on two stretches of highway in an effort to slow down speeders. More than 900 auto collisions have resulted in 21 deaths on a nine-mile stretch of Pacific Coast Highway between Malibu and the Ventura County line and another 139 accidents and nine deaths were reported on Kanan Dume Road between Pacific Coast Highway and the Ventura Freeway during the last two years, according to CHP statistics. The CHP attributed nearly a third of those accidents to speeding. The Board of Supervisors ordered county officials to negotiate with the CHP for use of radar on a one-year trial basis and also asked that the CHP provide additional patrol units.
