McGee Accepts 4-Year Laker Contract

Mike McGee, one of six Laker free agents, has agreed to a new, four-year contract for $1.4 million with the NBA champions.

McGee, who will be 26 Monday, is a four-year guard-forward whose contract expired after last season, during which he earned $200,000 and averaged a career-high 10.2 points.

A Laker representative said that McGee’s contract needs only to be typed so it can be signed.

McGee’s adviser, Dr. Charles Tucker, said that McGee could have signed an offer sheet with another team as a free agent but decided instead to stay with the Lakers.

“What’s more important than winning?” Tucker asked. “Mike’s got two championships in four years. We’re talking about winning. We’re not talking about who plays the most.”

Other Laker free agents, not counting Bob McAdoo, are Kurt Rambis, Larry Spriggs, Ronnie Lester, Chuck Nevitt and Earl Jones.
