Americans were told not to drink Austrian wine.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms warned consumers against drinking the wine after federal chemists found more brands contaminated with a deadly chemical normally added to automobile antifreeze. The bureau reported last week that it had found traces of diethylene glycol, which had been illegally added to the wines in Austria to make them taste sweeter. At the time, the bureau ordered a ban on sales of Austrian wine that had not been tested to ensure that it did not contain the chemical, which can cause ailments ranging from nausea to death.
