MCI Communications said it is now “unlikely” that its directors will approve the sale of its cellular and paging business to Mobile Communications Corp. of America because of Bellsouth Corp.’s $36-million investment in Mobile. MCI has opposed allowing former Bell telephone companies, such as Bellsouth, to offer local service outside their regional territories. Mobile, based in Jackson, Miss., said it had agreed to acquire the MCI division for $121.5 million and will pursue its consummation. A Mobile-Bellsouth joint venture would run the paging and cellular systems bought from MCI, Mobile said.
