Local News in Brief : Plan for Canoga Park Apartments Squelched
Under pressure from Canoga Park homeowners, the Los Angeles Planning Commission Thursday turned back a proposal to build an apartment house on a narrow Saticoy Street lot.
The commission rejected a zoning change that would have enabled property owner Keene W. Thomas to build the multifamily project. Instead, it authorized construction of up to five new single-family homes on the site.
Thomas’ 90-by-647-foot lot lies between existing homes and the Faith Baptist Church’s school and sanctuary. Church officials had sided with homeowners in complaining that apartments would bring crowding and traffic.
Development of single-family homes, suggested by aides to West Valley City Councilwoman Joy Picus as a compromise, would require a private driveway system to serve the new dwellings.
