A 75-acre grove of old redwood trees in Mendocino County has been protected from logging by a state appeals court, which found numerous violations of environmental laws by state officials. The decision by a three-member panel of the 1st District Court of Appeal is a victory for environmental and Indian groups who have fought Rex Timber’s logging plan, which had been approved by the state Department of Forestry. The suit by the Environmental Protection Information Center, joined by Native American groups, said the logging would cause excessive erosion, harm recreation and the beauty of the area and damage an Indian archeological site. The grove in the Lost Coast wilderness area includes trees more than 1,000 years old.
