Officials from the city’s Harbor Department will meet next month with merchants from the International Boardwalk to develop advertising standards for businesses and restaurants in what is known as the Basin 3 area.

Several merchants requested the meeting after city officials launched a crackdown on illegal signs and small billboards as part of a cleanup campaign.

Merchants complained to the City Council this week that the signs are crucial to their businesses, which they said rely heavily on impulse buying by tourists and other visitors. The merchants said removal of the signs could put some shops out of business.

The City Council voted to allow the advertising to remain until the new standards are developed.
