The Philippines’ air force commander, Vicente Piccio, charged that a routine entry in U.S. Air Force logbooks was altered to make it appear that Filipino officers scrambled jets to try to divert the airliner bringing opposition leader Benigno S. Aquino Jr. to Manila, government television reported. Piccio did not specify who might have tampered with the books. The San Francisco Examiner, quoting U.S. servicemen, has charged that the Filipinos made the interception effort. Aquino was shot to death in 1983 as he stepped from the plane at Manila.
