Prime Minister Shimon Peres met with leaders of Israel’s Ethiopian immigrants and said afterward that the Ethiopians are now recognized by the country’s two chief rabbis as Jews in every way. The rabbis no longer demand that the immigrants, brought in a secret airlift from their famine-plagued nation, undergo collective symbolic conversion, Peres said.
