A federal appeals court barred New York state officials from enforcing a law requiring new police officers to be under the age of 30. An attorney for New York City, however, said the city will continue to enforce an identical age limit because it operates under a different law than the one the court addressed. The city law also is under challenge. Three judges of the U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a 1984 ruling by the U.S. District Court in Buffalo, which ruled the age limit violates the federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act.
