Britain’s Steve Cram barely missed in an attempt to set a fourth world record in 24 days when he was timed in 2 minutes 12.85 seconds for 1,000 meters before a crowd of 13,000 at the Kodak meet on his local track in Gateshead, England.

Cram fell just short of the 1,000 record of 2:12.18 by countryman Sebastian Coe in the seldom-run distance. Coe set that mark in 1981. Cram had previously broken the records in the mile, 1,500 meters and 2,000 meters.
