Israel Pledges Strong Anti-Apartheid Stand

Prime Minister Shimon Peres on Monday pledged that Israel will adopt a tough stance against South Africa’s system of apartheid.

“Israel should never support discrimination,” Peres told reporters after a meeting here with Chief Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi, chief minister of the Zulu tribal homeland and a moderate leader of South African blacks. Peres added that his government will express its views to South African authorities “in ways that are open to us.”

Israel, one of the few Western countries that has not publicly condemned South Africa’s declaration of a state of emergency, has trade and military links with the Pretoria government.
