The government said Friday that it hopes to introduce new legislation to curb campus protests by September.

Education Minister Sohn Chae Suk told a news conference that the government is ready to accept “good ideas” by the opposition to supplement the bill, although its basic shape would be unchanged.

Sohn said the bill, under which radical students could be be sent to “reorientation centers” for up to six months, is aimed at “preventing the majority of students being contaminated with Communist ideology.”

Opposition and dissident leaders say the bill is an attempt to stifle criticism of the government of President Chun Doo Hwan, and they have vowed to oppose it inside and outside Parliament.
