The United States men’s 400-meter freestyle relay team, anchored by Matt Biondi, broke the world record by almost two seconds on the third day of the 1985 Pan Pacific swimming championships at Tokyo.

The team of Scott McCadam, Mike Heath, Paul Wallace and Biondi posted a time of 3 minutes 17.08 seconds to break the mark of 3:19.03, set by the U.S. team at the 1984 Summer Olympics.

Biondi, who broke the world record in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 48.95 seconds at the recent U.S. National meet, had a split time of 47.66 seconds.
