A suit filed by New Jersey politicians and labor leaders who contend the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are in their state rather than New York was sent back to state court in New Jersey by a federal judge. Rep. Frank J. Guarini (D-N.J.) and 10 other plaintiffs maintain that New York and New Jersey improperly entered into a pact in 1834 that gave control of Liberty and Ellis islands to New York. They say New Jersey deserves the tax revenues from the tourist attractions. In sending the case to Superior Court, the federal judge ruled that New York did not comply with a law on the transfer of a lawsuit from state to federal court.
