A Kanawha County, W. Va., official called the recent rash of chemical accidents there “acts of God” but added, “God certainly hasn’t been too good to this valley lately.” Douglas Stump, chairman of the county commission, made the comment after the third such mishap within eight days. Sulfur trioxide that leaked from a tanker truck on Interstate 64 Sunday night injured 10 persons, drove more than 50 others from their homes and closed a 12-mile stretch of highway. The spill occurred about 2 miles from Institute, site of one of two dangerous gas leaks from Union Carbide Corp. plants last week.
