‘Most-Favored’ Romania Status

You wrote in your article on Romania that the Senate Finance Committee should not revoke Romania’s most-favored-nation status. One may come to the same conclusion by asking himself what the United States would gain by this action. In my opinion, not much.

Since Romania is struggling to maintain some distance between itself and the Soviet Union, our continued relations could encourage Romanian independence. Withdrawal of the Romanian most-favored-nation status would not in any way set them on the road towards capitalism. In fact, this action may strengthen the ties between Romania and the Soviet Union.

Consequently, in agreement with your position, I feel the only sensible solution is to allow Romania to maintain its most-favored-nation status, and to use our connection with them to influence their policies.
