Purex Corp. of Lakewood, Calif., has agreed in federal court to pay as much as $15 million to clean up contaminated soil and water on a former chemical plant site on Long Island, N.Y. Nassau County officials said water at Mitchel Field, a developing commercial area, was found to contain up to nearly 500,000 parts per billion of certain contaminants, compared to the acceptable standard of 10 parts per biilion. The contamination was caused by operations of Baron Blakeslee Inc., a chemical company which has since merged with Purex, according to a county investigation.
